THE STUDIO IS THE PERFORMANCE
The studio is not where I prepare the performance.
The studio is the performance.

PROVENANCE
A PIANO WITH A PAST.
A STUDIO WITH A PRESENT.
This Grotrian-Steinweg grand piano was built in 1907.
Its history reaches into the musical world of Weimar and the von Holleben family. According to Dr. von Holleben’s account, the instrument was connected to the circle surrounding Martha Remmert — pianist, Liszt pupil and founder of the Franz Liszt Society.
He also told me something I would never forget: while Remmert practised and performed, members of the family would sometimes dance on the piano.
The traces remain.
Scratches in the old shellac surface are still visible today — physical marks carried forward through more than a century of musical life.
Many years later, I was invited to play for Dr. von Holleben in his Berlin home.
I performed my song “Über’s Meer” and, at his request, Chopin’s Nocturne in E-flat major, Op. 9 No. 2.
Afterwards, he told me that the piano would one day be left to me.
“You are worthy of it.”
At the time, I did not yet understand the full resonance of that moment.
Later, while continuing my own living-room concerts and live recordings, I realised that I had — without consciously intending it — carried forward something remarkably close to the old salon tradition.
That continuity became visible publicly as well. During Piano City, the story of the instrument and one of my living-room concerts attracted television coverage; the performance later appeared in cultural television formats including ttt and Kulturzeit.
Today, the piano is no museum piece.
It is played.
It is recorded.
It remains part of an active artistic life.

NOW
THE ARTIST IN THE ROOM
At the grand piano, a historical instrument speaks.
At the stage piano, songs are written, recorded and performed.
Both belong to the same artistic practice.

Between grand piano and stage piano, the work moves freely between classical repertoire, songwriting, voice and recording.
Two instruments. One artistic language.
PRESENT TENSE
ON ITS OWN TERMS.
Piano, songs, recording and visual work are not separate disciplines.
They are different forms of the same artistic practice.
The work decides the form.
BASTIAN LEE JONES — ON ITS OWN TERMS.
